The Golden Slipper Stakes was the brainchild of then committeeman of the Sydney Turf Club, George Ryder. The race is traditionally run on the Saturday before Easter at Rosehill racecourse.

His idea was for a race exclusively for two year olds run at special weights - being 8 stone 7lbs (54 kg) for colts and geldings and 8 stone (51 kg) for fillies. Ryder believed that the fillies needed the extra allowance to ensure they would have a reasonable chance of defeating the colts and geldings.

To date the Golden Slipper has been run 54 times with colts  and geldings winning 27 times and fillies 17.

The first Golden Slipper was run in 1957 with 11 runners and the champion colt Todman (by Star Kingdom) raced away to win. Over the next four years the winners were all sired by the champion sire Star Kingdom whose sirelines can still be found in the breeding of many of today's winners.

Golden Slipper winners Todman, Baguette, Vain, Marscay and Marauding have also gone on to sire winners of this race. The 90s have seen the dominance of the shuttle stallion, Danehill, who has sired four winners in that decade. The most successful trainer was the late T J Smith with six winners followed by J B (Bart) Cummings, Clarry Conners and Lee Freedman with four winners each.

The most successful jockeys have been Ron Quinton and Shane Dye with 4 wins each, followed by Mick Dittman, Kevin Langby and Athol Mulley with three each. Two apprentices have won the Slipper - Wayne Harris and Darren Beadman.

The inaugural Golden Slipper was worth 20,000 pounds compared to the Slipper of 2000 which carried prize money of $2,500,000 with the winner receiving $1,500,000 and trophies. The Golden Slipper is now the richest 2YO horse race in the world.

Joke of the Month

Did you hear about the guy who went to the races and while there he observed a Roman Catholic priest who went over to a horse and sprinkled it with holy water. The horse went on to win the race, streaking ahead of the opposition. Before the next race he saw the priest go over to another horse and sprinkle it with holy water. Like the first horse it went on to win its race.

The guy said to himself that if the priest sprinkles another horse with holy water I am going to bet every penny I have on that horse. Sure enough, the priest went over to another horse and sprinkled it with holy water. So the guy went to a bookie and bet every penny he had on this horse.

Then the race started and the horse that the priest sprinkled with holy water dropped dead about 100 yards after the start of the race.

The guy was devastated. So he went over to the priest and said, "What's going on here? The last two horses you sprinkled with holy water went on to win their races, and this last one you sprinkled dropped dead after only 100 yards. I had put every penny I had on it's nose!"

The priest replied, "You're not Roman Catholic, are you?" The guy admitted that he was not and asked, "But, how do you know that?"

The priest said, "Because you don't know the difference between giving a blessing and administering the last rights."
